Wellness Walk
Vice President Kathleen O’Brien and VP for Human Resources Carol Carrier started the day with a Wellness Walk. About 50 people strolled from the Washington Avenue Bridge down Northrop Mall and Scholars Walk to McNamara Alumni Center. You can see photos by viewing the slideshow.
IREE Workshop, Cargill Building for Microbial and Plant Genomics

St. Paul Lot S101 Improvements, 2043 Commonwealth Avenue

Friendship Bench Dedication, Bell Museum grassy knoll
MacLaurin Student Group and Al-Madinah Cultural Center dedicated a new Friendship Bench at the grassy knoll between Nolte Center and the Bell Museum. Landscape design was done by Facilities Management Landcare. A Beautiful U Day grantee. You can see photos by viewing the slideshow.
Bell Museum's Logo Unveiling Event, Bell Museum Sculpture Garden
Bell Museum celebrated Beautiful U Day by unveiling a beautiful new logo. There were several children there who received free hot cocoa and s'mores. Bell Museum Director Scott Lanyon, University First Lady
Susan Hagstrum and Bell Museum Board Chair Ann Glumac were on hand.
Beautiful U Day Lunch, Northrop Plaza and the St. Paul Student Center
Free l unch was served by 50 volunteers to over 8000 hungry students, faculty, and staff at Northrop Plaza on the Minneapolis campus and the St. Paul Student Center on the St. Paul campus. You can see photos by viewing the slideshow.

Boynton Health Service Artwork Celebration, Roen Room W120, Boyton Health Service Building
There was a celebration of the commissioning of artist Tetsuya Yamada to create a permanent public artwork at Boynton Health Service. Weisman Art Museum and Boynton Health Services collaborated on this event. The artist was on hand to provide comments and there was a reception afterwards. A Beautiful U Day grantee.

Oak Street Ramp Beautification
The beautification project, organized by Parking and Transportation Services, took place at the Oak Street Ramp. A Beautiful U Day grantee. You can see photos by viewing the slideshow.
Storm Drain Marking Project
Over 550 storm drains on East and West Banks were marked by permanent stickers warning people not to pour anything down the drains. You can see photos by viewing the slideshow.

Curb Appeal Project
Beautiful U Day Curb Appeal, a campus clean-up event, took place on both the east and west banks of the Minneapolis campus. Volunteers refilled ash urns and washed the outside of entrance door windows on both the East and West Bank campuses. You can see photos by viewing the slideshow.

Arts Quarter Artwork Unveiling, empty lot near Riverside and 21st Avenue
The empty lot near Riverside and 21st Avenue (near Regis Art Center) was prepared for an artwork unveiling. A Beautiful U Day grantee.

Beautiful U Day Awards, 125 Science Classroom Building
Beautiful Classroom Award: A partnership between Beautiful U Day and the Office of Classroom Management, begun in 2003, honors the custodial staff member or team that provides University of Minnesota students with classrooms that are clean and ready for use every day. Winner: Folwell Hall custodians; Chris Duba, Brian Lutz, Elen Asfeday and Kevin Dean.
Beautiful Building Award: Beautiful U Day continued the tradition of honoring those that keep our campus beautiful by inaugurating the Beautiful Building Award. This annual honor is awarded to the
custodial staff member or team that provides University of Minnesota
students, faculty and staff with facilities and spaces that are
exceptionally clean and comfortable. This award encompasses all campus
buildings and areas, including Residence Halls. Winner: Peters Hall; Sandy Dokka and Haile Redda
Beautiful Volunteer Award: A new award was developed this year for a person who went above and beyond to help make Beautiful U Day a success. Winner: Les Potts

Appleby Hall Patio Improvements
The TRIO Student Advisory Board and the General College Student Board cleaned up and made improvements to the Appleby Hall Patio. Stop by and see what they have done. Butterfly Garden, Green Hall
The College of Natural Resources planted a butterfly garden near Green Hall. This area will be monitored and research will be done on Monarch Butterflys. A Beautiful U Day grantee. You can see photos by viewing the slideshow.
EcoFair, Coffman Union and the St. Paul Student Center
Tables at Coffman Union and the St. Paul Student Center featured easy and economical ways to be environmentally-friendly. A Beautiful U Day grantee.

Pledge Against Violence: A part of Beautiful U Day, Coffman Union
This event took place on April 20th and the 21st. The Pledge Against Violence is an art project in which members of the University community dip their hands in paint and put their imprint on a large canvas, thus taking a pledge against violence. The finished pledge canvases in buildings around campus. A Beautiful U Day grantee. For more information visit (www.umn.edu/aurora).
Rooftop Gardens, Rapson Hall
On the East Bank near Rapson Hall, the Environmental Studies Club is installing pilot planters. If this research project proves successful, it may become a part of future rooftops across the University – enhancing the air quality and promoting better storm water drainage. A Beautiful U Day grantee.
Signs for Sarita, Sarita Wetlands
Watch for new interpretive signage near the Sarita Wetlands on the St. Paul campus. A Beautiful U Day grantee.
Weaver-Densford Courtyard Improvements
Stop by and see how the Pre-Pharmacy Club has enhanced this much-used courtyard. A Beautiful U Day grantee.

Events in Conjunction with Beautiful U Day
University YMCA Mississippi River Bed Clean-up
About 35 s tudents and other volunteers braved the weather to pick up trash and beautify our campus along the Mississippi River. A Beautiful U Day grantee.
University YMCA Subs in Tubs
Participants helped out by making sandwiches for homeless shelters. By making a small donations, volunteers received a sandwich, beverage and chips, plus one to be donated. A Beautiful U Day grantee.
Hands are not for Hitting
Hands Are Not for Hitting is an art project in which children at the University of Minnesota's Child Care Center dipped their hands in paint and put their imprint on a canvas. The children were also read a book entitled, "Hands Are Not for Hitting" and got stickers with that same message printed on them, which the children colored. The finished canvases will be displayed in buildings around campus, including the U Child Care Center. A Beautiful U Day grantee.
Morris Wind Turbine
The University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center officially commissioned its 1.65 MW Vestas wind turbine. This event took place near our Morris campus.
St. Paul Recreational Sports Fields, May 2005
An irrigation project will enhance these popular playing fields and ensure good drainage and care of the surrounding plants. A Beautiful U Day grantee.
