Beautiful U Day 1999
The
Third Annual Beautiful U Day was again a great success. For the
first time, Beautiful U Day was expanded to two days of fun. The
first day of the celebration was dedicated to the year's largest
coordinated recycling and trash collection effort. The second day
was a chance to show off new public spaces and building projects.
Thank you to all the volunteers and to those who took part in the
many events.

Campus Appreciations
Campus Appreciation Breakfasts were held at 10 different sites
around the East Bank, West Bank and St. Paul campuses on Wednesday
as a thank you to students, faculty and staff for their patience
during this period of unprecedented construction. The menu included
granola bars, apples and milk.
What a better way to warm up on a brisk fall day than with coffee,
cider and cookies. Facilities Management zone 6 employees passed
out the free items on Thursday. Zone 2 employees also passed out
coffee and hot chocolate on both mornings. Zone 3 held its second
annual ice cream social on Thursday.
Campus Appreciation Lunches were held at the St. Paul Student Center
and on the Washington Avenue Bridge on Thursday. Students, faculty
and staff were treated to sandwiches, chips and cookies, plus a
special gift - a can cooler with the Beautiful U Day logo. Lunch
guests could also view drawings and plans of the many construction
projects on campus. On the bridge, lunch-goers could even play a
game of mini golf, thanks to the ingenuity of Facilities Management
zone 6 staff.

Campus Cleanout '99
The cleanout gave staff a much-needed opportunity to clean out
the clutter in buildings. People jumped at the chance! It took Facilities
Management staff two days to collect all the material.
A special group, calling themselves the G.A.C. Squad (Gang Against
Crud), cleaned up areas around Zone 4, including the Community Clinic.

Building Improvements
Williamson Hall was the target of many improvements. Carpenters
Steve Wynkoop and Eddie Fuerstenberg, along with photographer Tom
Foley, unveiled a new mural inside Williamson Hall. The mural, "Beauty
in the Details," depicts various architectural elements from
five buildings near Williamson Hall. Foley took the photographs
and Wynkoop and Fuerstenberg built and hung the mural.
A group of alumni from Dayton-Hudson Corporation volunteered an
afternoon to plant shrubs and clean windows. The group dug right
in and planted an entire bed of shrubs and washed many windows on
Williamson Hall. Facilities Management staff also helped with the
window washing.

Honoring Special Employee's and people
Many special employee's and people gathered to honor Vern Mattson,
a University truck driver who died last year. Vern left money in
his will to plant trees around campus. His family and co-workers
were on hand for the planting of the first two trees.
Approximately 30 Autumn Splendor Buckeye trees will be planted
throughout campus.
Facilities Management employees and customers who "go above
and beyond" were honored at a Recognition Ceremony held in
the newly reopened Garden Plaza.

And we had some fun!
Have you ever seen a university president smash a pumpkin with
a steamroller? Well, that's exactly what people saw at the Kick-Off
Event on Thursday. In honor of both Beautiful U Day and Homecoming,
President Mark Yudof drove a steamroller over pumpkins painted with
the opposing teams' logos. It was a "smashing" way to
kick off the day.
Volunteers from Facilities Management zone 5 made many improvements
to the Child Care Facility, including painting and building a bridge
between the playhouses. Of course, a beautiful fall day wouldn't
be complete without a big pile of leaves to play in!

New Campus Additions
Artist Ian Dudley was on hand to discuss his latest work, a diorama
in front of the Bell Museum. Dudley is the exhibits coordinator
for the Bell Museum.
Additional heritage markers were unveiled at Pillsbury and Folwell
halls. The Heritage Marker program began last year as a part of
Beautiful U Day '98. Each marker explains historic details about
buildings and areas on campus.
President Mark Yudof, University Services Vice President Eric Kruse
and Campus Master Planning Associate Vice President Clint Hewitt
cut the ribbon, officially opening the newly renovated Garden Plaza.
Mother Nature provided a great backdrop for the event with beautiful
fall colors and a clear blue sky.
